Christmas in Berlin

I had doubt about writing this blog post considering the awful attack at one of Berlin's Christmas markets recently but I don't feel Berlin and it's dedication to festivity should be dampened by the brutality of the recent attacks. My heart goes out to anyone effected by the events and I hope that Berlin can shine brighter and stand together stronger than ever.

We recently visited Berlin for the second time in early December to explore some new areas, visit our favourite spots and indulge in all of the traditional Christmas markets.

We stayed in a hotel on the Kurfurstendamm again during this trip which is one of my favourite streets in the whole of Berlin, with stores to suit all ages and budgets, along with dainty little coffee shops winding off of the main street. I never get bored of walking around this area and considering it is so central, it is one of the most tranquil spots in Berlin. We also spent a lot of time around Alexanderplatz which was completely transformed with Christmas markets, ice rinks and fair ground rides. We spent majority of our time during this trip drinking gluhwein and wandering around for hours on end.
I'm not going to write a huge list of recommendations on where to visit in Berlin as 1) the list would be endless and 2) both times I have visited the city, my favourite thing has been exploring without any real plan in mind.

I hope the photos can give you an idea of what to expect if you ever visit Berlin at Christmas and if you're curious of what it's like during the Summer months then you can also read about it here. Berlin is slightly more commercialised than other German/Austrian cities at Christmas. We visited Vienna last Christmas and found it to be far more traditional. With that being said, there is definitely perks to Berlin being slightly more commercialised as there is so much more going on. The Christmas markets where also filled with activities, fair ground rides, numerous ice rinks and apres-ski style parties - something for everyone!
...Do you have any recommendations on which European cities to visit at Christmas time?
